    Features and …
Features and performance are always good to know, but what about maintenance?

Before you make your purchase make sure you ask where the ‘main’ backup battery is held, how long it lasts and the likely cost of its replacement.

I have one and it is superb. It’s now £269 @ Amazon, I went through all the different cameras in this price bracket and you will not find more value for money.

Im in the same situation, I think im going with the sony, seems like the same quality of the Nikon/Cannon and has a bigger range of cheap good quality lenes because it can use older minolta lenses.

    The kit lens is …
The kit lens is fine for most general shots. Optical quality isn’t the best but its a good starter lens for the money.
For sport, wildlife, candids, distant views etc a telephoto lens (eg the 55-200mm) is useful. Or you could get, say, the Sigma 18-200mm as a one-lens-for-all solution. Not best quality but convenient.
You’re unlikely to need anything wider than 18mm but for interiors, big group shots, landscapes, travel an ultrawide is useful (eg 11-18mm) but expensive.

AFAIK the standard kit lens with a Sony D-SLR is a 18-70mm

    Live View is the …
Live View is the ability to view the scene on the LCD before taking the pic, as you can with any compact. Till 2-3 years ago you couldn’t do this with a DSLR.
The viewfinder is still the best way to use a DSLR. They don’t lend themselves to being held at arms length like a compact and you’ll get more camera shake this way, but there are some times where its useful - eg using a tripod. The best ones have tilting screens so you can shoot from low/high angles. The Sony A350 is the best of these.

I am planning to buy a Sony DSLR. Can you please clear my 2 doubts,
1> What is Live View and how is it useful
2> Will the lens 18-55mm, that comes with the camera sufficient for a good zoom or should I purchase additional lens.
    Thanks in advance…

    Oh yes, sorry. Was …
Oh yes, sorry. Was thinking of course of the A350. The A300 isn’t actually on general release in the UK, and is officially only available from Jessops. We haven’t reviewed it but from what I can tell the major differences seems to be the addition of Live View and an extra £100

Sorry to correct you, but the one with 14MP is actually the A350. Cheers.

    The A300 is the …
The A300 is the next model up in the range. Very similar in many ways but 14MP instead of 10MP and the addition of Live View. And more expensive of course.
